Avurudu used to be a true celebration of culture, tradition, and community. I remember 25 years ago, the festival was broadcast from a central town with real festivity, joy, and public participation. It felt authentic, it felt ours.
Now? Every channel, every platform is saturated with the same set of celebrities. The same faces we see in teledramas all year round are now front and center for Avurudu too. And let’s be honest-they don’t represent the average Sri Lankan. They don’t even pay for the outfits they wear; everything is sponsored, staged, and commercialized.
Why has Avurudu become just another TV show? Where’s the creativity, the community, the real essence of the New Year? Social platforms and TV stations should be more innovative-highlight real people, real stories, real celebrations from across the island. Not just another round of celebrity worship.
I truly hope others feel the same way and we start asking for more meaningful, inclusive, and refreshing content during our most important cultural celebrations."
