It is directed by Stanley Kubrick, and is one of his most well-known works. The film was written by Kubrick, Michael Herr, and Gustav Hasford, though due to Hasford and Kubrick not getting along, Hasford ended up not contributing much to the final product. Hasford was the author of the original semi-autobiographical 1979 novel the film was based on, The Short-Timers, which later received a sequel that has not been adapted to film. The film's original music was composed by Kubrick's daughter, Vivian Kubrick, credited as Abigail Mead. The title refers to a type of bullet used by American soldiers, which is called full metal jacket bullet. The film follows the wartime experiences of wartime correspondent Joker, beginning in 1967, when he, along with fellow recruits Cowboy and Private Pyle, undergo a brutal training regimen led by Sgt. Gunnery Hartman and ending in 1968 when he is sent to Vietnam. The film was notably R. Lee Ermey's debut, and his character Sgt. Gunnery Hartman, is one of the most iconic and influential elements of the film, becoming a major influence on future drill sergeant characters. Ermey was originally intended to just be a consultant, but Ermey asked if he could audition for the role and showed Kubrick a video of him yelling improvised obscenities at marines to prove he can be as vicious as the role required, which got him the role. Ermey also improvised quite a bit of his character's dialogue in the film, making him one of the few actors who was allowed to improvise in one of Kubrick's films. Although the movie is about the Vietnam War, it was actually entirely shot in England with various locations made up to look like Vietnam. The film has no relation to Full Metal Panic! or Full Metal Alchemist.
